Osteopathic Neuromuscular Rehabilitation

Dora Franco, B.Sc., D.O., BI-D ( www.terapia-sacrocraniana.blogspot.com ) completed the Post-Graduate Course Osteopathic Neuromuscular Rehabilitation, developed by Prof. Eyal Lederman, D.O., from the Centre for Professional Development in Osteopathy and Manual Therapy in the United Kingdom, and was supervised by the Portuguese Federation of Osteopaths.

Neuromuscular Rehabilitation is essential for treating injuries in the back and extremities, sports injuries and for rehabilitation after surgery. Thus it is crucial for therapists to know what happens to the neuromuscular system following musculoskeletal injuries and learn how to treat these changes.

The course also provided a new therapeutic approach for working with patients who suffered damage in their Central Nervous System. Based on his own and current neuromuscular research, Prof. Eyal explained the functional organisation of the motor system, how movement and posture are generated, the principles of motor learning, neural plasticity and adaptation. During the practical aspect of the course were identified ways of influencing the motor system and demonstrated how Neuromuscular "Re-abilitation" could be used to treat the different conditions associated with motor dysfunction. It included hands-on manual approaches as well as specific exercises to regain and improve motor control of posture and movement.
